We welcome and embrace all levels of athletes, from those chasing world championships to others who have yet to dip their toe into a competition. The common thread among all Purple Patch athletes is the desire to improve, but for the vast majority, this goes well beyond the results achieved in sport. At our core, we embrace the power of sport and all the benefits it can offer in health and life performance.
We encourage our athletes to view performance goals within the context of a broader life. Success is not just about hitting a new PR or qualifying for a world championships if that means it negatively impacts your health, relationships, or performance at work. We take our jobs very seriously, but that doesn’t mean that we cannot collectively have fun along the way. It is why we often talk about “serious with a wink” as a part of our company and athlete culture.
Even our professional Tri Squad makes this journey to performance fun with a healthy blend of high motivation and work ethic, coupled with great community and support. A wonderful example of this in action is our training sessions in San Francisco or our many training camps set around the world. The mantra at these sessions and camps is to leave your ego at home. As Matt Dixon likes to say, “Everyone looks the same when they are stripped down into their speedos.” This is born out of a belief that best performances arrive from a supportive environment in which respect for each others goals and passion facilitates an environment for each athlete to do one simple thing: try their best.
We also notice a couple of trends that emerge from our athlete population:
- A quest to understand the “why” behind the training
- A thirst for a wide scope of quality knowledge and education
We often refer to attracting the “discerning athlete.” These two qualities lend themselves to a broader lens of sports performance, leading to improved human potential. This filter encourages guidance of a more global nature and provides a rich culture of education and understanding of the methods behind the training.
