Although my professional life is based around triathlon coaching, I spend a great deal of time focusing more generally on human performance. While I have a central focus on helping elite athletes unapologetically chase world-class performance, a big part of my mission is to draw on lessons from these pros and apply them to very busy individuals who are seeking performance across a wider lens.
For the majority of purplepatch athletes, I would argue that the phrase 'performance' extends beyond the results that we achieve in our sporting life. My hope is that integrating a purplepatch approach to endurance training and triathlon into your life not only allows you to reach your sporting goals, but also results in improved health, daily energy levels, and brain function. For me, this is what performance truly should be. The sporting results are important, but we cannot be successful if these results come at a consequence to other parts of your life (relationships, health, etc). I am only successful if I can help an athlete accomplish their goals both on and off the course.
This mentality is central to everything we do at purplepatch, from the training plans we build to the supporting education create. Having this mindset as a backdrop, you can envision my excitement to be asked to contribute to Brad Stulburg and Steve Magness's new book: Peak Performance. I have known Brad for a long time and enjoyed watching from the sideline as he has traveled his own journey of performance, emerging as one of the leading writers in the performance space over several years. I had not spent any time with Steve Magness, a well known and respected running coach, but as soon as we sat down, it became apparent that we shared a very similar mindset and approach to coaching, albeit in different sports. I immediately recognized that the unique combination of talent and skill sets between Brad and Steve were going to make a very interesting book, causing me to be delighted to make my small contribution.
Their mission was simple: They wanted to carve through the quick fixes, gimmicks, and claims of 'life-hacking' that all promised improved life performance. Instead, they set about on a deep investigation into many top performers in a wide range of disciplines, aiming to identify the mindset, habits, and approach that make them successful. Brad and Steve didn't set out to deliver a quick fix. Instead, they have forged a deeper understanding and knowledge of how performance evolution occurs. Now that I have my own copy of the book (which is not signed by either author I might add!), I have had the chance to delve into the result of their research and work. It is a compelling reading. I would encourage you to grab a copy for yourself. I think you will see plenty of trends and messages that are aligned with how I talk and coach, the difference being that Brad and Steve pull information from far reaching performers, which make the life parallels and lessons that much more powerful.
Don't miss out.
Cheers,
Matt
