vEveresting under 11 hours
Being stuck at home, why not ride 29,029 ft of elevation on Zwift's Alpe du Zwift?
That's 8.5 times up the virtual mountain. I usually can make it up in about an hour with 3.2 to 3.5 w/kg. My PR is just under 45 minutes, but that was going all out. So I figured about 60-70 minutes up each time, and then a nice 10 minute break during each descent (you don't need to be on the bike to make it officially count).
I started about 4AM with a friend also making the attempt. The first time up is fun. The second is harder. The third is easier for some reason. Then it just kind of becomes what you're doing.
Halfway up #2, I started some Netflix and YouTube just to pass the time. It definitely helps to have friends to chat with the whole time - that helped a ton. The last couple ascents required loud music though.
I kept my heart rate under 130 bpm - often below 120 - which I knew meant I could keep going all day. This put be at around 3.2 w/kg, or 250 watts. I actually was up around 270 watts quite often though. A couple times up, I felt really good, and had a different friend riding with me, so I pushed it. My fastest time that day was a bit over 55 minutes.
Here are my tips for anyone interested in vEveresting:
- Get your family on board - huge Kudos to my awesome wife for letting me be on my big all day
- Be ready for low rpms – or get a bigger cassette – I was usually around 55-60 rpm with my standard road bike cassette
- Keep your heart rate low (below LT1)
- Eat and drink A TON during each ascent - and even more during the 10 minute breaks
- Enlist friends to cheer you on and ride 1 or 2 ascents with you
- Start early, but get some sleep beforehand
- Find distractions to keep your spirit up
- Celebrate!
