Message from Purple Patch: COVID-19
At Purple Patch, we take your personal health and safety very seriously. You may have some growing concerns about coronavirus (COVID-19), and we have great empathy for those already affected and want all of us to remain vigilant in this emerging situation.
We should note that, as of now, we do not have any information or insights around specific events or races, but will share as and when we hear any news. The coming two weeks will likely provide more clarity, so we will keep our training hats on and await more specific insight. In the meantime, we want to provide some advice around staying healthy in training and life:
- Keep training. Fitness, health, and the basic habits that we discuss are the backbone of resilience.
- Substitute fist pumps for high fives. Feel comfortable not participating in any bodily contact with training partners, if you wish.
- Stay home if you are not feeling well, especially if you have a fever, are coughing or sneezing, or are experiencing shortness of breath.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, particularly after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- Keep hand sanitizer available. If you must travel, wipe down all areas surrounding your seat, armrest, and tray table when first getting on the plane, as well as as you depart.
- Be vigilant with larger groups. Ultimately, a personal decision, but make your best personal decisions around integrating with large groups (100+).
If you have any questions or concerns around your training, then please let us know. We are planning to provide some insights into how to navigate any obstacles to training, such as closed swimming pools, and will be posting in the coming days.
We are closely monitoring updates from the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization regarding COVID-19. We will continue to seek guidance from these agencies and public health officials, and we will update you as new information becomes available to us.
Yours in Health,
Matt Dixon and Kelli McMaster

Matt,
I just watched the video attached to the Sunday Special. This was very well done and was an excellent example of calm, reasoned, and hopeful leadership.
As Director of EMS Operations for the Calgary Zone of Alberta Health Services, I support 1000 paramedics serving a large population over a large geographic area. Your advice and approach is in line with all of the public health messaging: stay healthy, look after yourself, and care for others when you can. Thank you for this approach in the blizzard of panicked bullshit (to borrow a phrase) that is common in other forums. As we do in our messaging, you acknowledged the reality and then moved on to what we can control and what we can do.
I am also an associate professor in the School of Leadership Studies at Royal Roads University. I have used that lens to observe you in all aspects of Purple Patch (podcasts, videos, etc.) and your actions personify what we teach in the Masters program I work in. That was particularly evident in today's video.
Thank you and lead on.
Les Fisher
